It's A Hard Knock Life!

The Dance Club have been working really hard to get ready for the Gateshead Schools' Dance Festival. Children from Years One to Six have been meeting after school on a Wednesday. They have put together a fabulous dance to the song "A hard knock life" from Annie.

IMG_6023.JPG

Mrs Pigott is really proud of each and every one of you. You have all shown fantastic commitment, and worked really hard to learn the dance in such a short space of time. I cannot wait to see you performing on stage at the Sage.

The Festival takes place on Tuesday 12th March, at The Sage, Gateshead. Can I just take this opportunity to also thank parents for their support.

Introducing Book Week 2013
(11th – 15th February)
THIS YEAR’S THEME IS:
BOOKFAIR GARDEN…CATCH THE READING BUG

Book Week 2013
(11th – 15th February)
THIS YEAR’S THEME IS:
BOOKFAIR GARDEN…CATCH THE READING BUG

It’s nearly time for this year’s Book Week which has always been a fantastic and enjoyable time for the children as well as being supported by parents exceptionally well. There will be loads of events and loads of ways to get involved!

Bookfair
The Bookfair arrives in school on Monday 11th February and will be with us until Thursday. As always, it will be based in the Junior Hall and books, posters and stationery will be available to buy each night from 3.30pm. This year the theme is ‘Bookfair Garden: Catch the reading bug’ (An Eco theme) and some of the books you can purchase are shown in the catalogue. There is always a great selection and the school also benefits from the fair. Last year the school received just over £200 which was put towards buying further Literacy resources.

Fun Afternoon (Wednesday 13th)
The children love this! This is an afternoon in celebration of Book Week where the kids simply enjoy themselves. The Year 6s will be running this as an enterprise project and look after stalls selling all kinds of things. We will also have various competitions like guess the name of the ‘cuddly toy’ etc. Children are free to bring in money on this day and spend it during the afternoon. The Book Fair will be open during the fun afternoon and there will be face painting which is always popular so fill in the form below if you do not wish your child to be painted! If you have any old books/comics or story tapes/DVDs you no longer want, please start bringing them to school and place them in the boxes beside Mrs Redhead’s office. They must be Universal DVDs and suitable books only please. Also if you have any good items for a tombola - gift sets, cuddly toys etc they would be greatly appreciated.

Non-uniform day
Children can get dressed up on Wednesday 13th to match the theme of our Eco Book Week. There will be prizes for the best costume! Anything linked with the Eco theme will be great. Your child could be a farmer, gardener, flower, tree, mini-beast! This non-uniform day will be great fun.

Parent/Guardian & Child competition
Last year we ran a parent and child competition which proved very successful – a few parents and guardians proved to be budding writers! This year, we want to encourage you to take part in something a little different. Take a photograph of your child or your whole family reading somewhere. Send in a photo of you reading anywhere…in a boat…upside down…in a tree…underground…on a trip…the sky’s the limit! The winning photograph will be chosen by a special visitor and will not be chosen for its quality, but its level of interest! There will, of course be prizes for the most inventive! Photos must be sent into school by Thursday 14th February. Good Luck!

500 words Event
This year we will be taking part in the 500 words Radio 2 competition. Teachers may choose to organise the competition differently but most will bring home some talk homework linked with the writing competition challenge, so carers have the opportunity to give their child ideas to include in the writing. During ‘Pirate Writing’ sessions your child will write a story and the best in each class will be sent to the Radio competition. For further details on this competition, please visit:

BBC Schools

I’m sure the whole week will be a great success. There will be loads of prizes and exciting events during the week. Let’s raise as much money as possible to buy further resources to boost our children’s learning and enjoyment in school.

Our Friday Assembly

In our Whole School Assembly this week, we heard from lots of children about what they had learnt.

Callum from the ARMS unit told us that he had learnt how to add and take away numbers higher than 100,000 by using vertical methods. Also within Numeracy, Shannon has been learning how to simplify fractions to their lowest form. Peter from year two has also learnt about vertical addition and subtraction. Elicia from year 5, talked about how she had learnt how to use brackets and the BoDMAS method for carrying out operations in the correct order.

Year 3 are reading the story of the 'Iron Man.' Toni has learnt about how to find particular things about the story and also how to make a model of it within the Creative Curriculum.
Children in year 4 and 5 have been looking at playscripts at different stages. Year 4, including Charley, have learnt about the structure and tried some acting. Year 5 have looked at advanced layouts and also characterisation.

Within Science and the Creative Curriculum, Zak from year one was able to tell us about the parts of a skeleton and other children put their hands up to tell us that the skeleton protects the main parts of the body such as the heart.

Courtney from year 5 told everyone about how she has learnt to use an atlas to find different places and features. She also told us that some towns and cities were built next to rivers to be next to water.

Neptune were once again house point champions.

Year 1 love castles!

CIMG1015.JPG
Look at Year 1's fantastic display about Castles. We produced a massive amount of work and learned loads! We have learned to use our Speed Sounds to help us with our Fred Spelling when writing.

CIMG0717.JPG
Our Castles theme was fun!
CIMG1026.JPG
We had our own castle role play area and enjoyed pretending to be knights and princesses.
We told many stories. Our symmetrical shields are fantastic. We told each other about a time when we felt brave and scared.

Homeless Shoebox Appeal

CIMG0949.JPG
The whole school took part in a homeless shoebox appeal and Nick the chef came to tell us how we can help the homeless at Christmas. Roman Road's shoebox, designed by Year 1 child, Shelby Champney came first out of 7 schools across Gateshead. Roman Road organised the event with Nick and we hope to move into South Tyneside next year to extend the challenge.

CIMG0851.JPG
Miss Allen read 'Stick Man' by Julia Donaldson at a follow up assembly to remind us that not all people live in lovely homes at winter time. Some have no home and no-one to take care of them. Overall we filled 80 boxes at Roman Road. Gateshead's total number was 450! They were given out at the people's kitchen party as well as Hospitality and Hope in South Shields.

3D Shape Castle by Year 1

CIMG0791.JPG
Look at our tremendous 3D castle!
We made it in maths using only card and masking tape! We had to look at the properties of 3D shapes first, then work with our partners to make our own 3D version. We then put all the cuboids, cones and cylinders together to make a castle good enough for a king!

CIMG0796.JPG

CIMG0784.JPG
Can you make a castle?
How many 3D shapes can you find at home?

George and the Dragon!

CIMG0779.JPG
As part of our Castles theme, we retold the story of George and the Dragon. The dragon was fiersome and gruesome and extremely horrid! We acted out the story. We had a very scary dragon!

CIMG1028.JPG
We used lots of WoW adjectives in our Pirate Writing to describe the dragon and George. We learned that an adjective is a describing word.

Whole School Assembly - Friday 30th November 2012

Castles, castles and more castles !!!!!!
Year 1 showed us their model castles which they have been making at home with their parents. They are fantastic!!!

Some children from Key Stage 2 came out to tell us what they had learned this week.
Charlie from year 3 confidently told us that he'd found out that the inverse of multiplication is divide. He went on to explain that inverse means opposite.

Jordan explained that he had learnt about decomposition when carrying out subtraction sums using a compact method. He was able to do thousands - thousands using double decomposition.

Cameron in year six told us that he'd learned lots about circles including that the perimeter is called the circumference. He also said that the radius is half of the diameter which runs through the middle point from side to side. As part of this work, he can now use a pair of compasses to draw a circle to a particular size.

The House trophy was won by Apollo.

Marie had learnt how to make a cake whilst Chloe had learnt what life was like during the Blitz. Cameron has been learning how to write a newspaper report.

In addition to this, Ruby has been working hard at home to find information on a wolf to link in to her Creative Curriculum topic.

Whole School Assembly - Friday 5th October

This week, we heard from some year 5 children who told us what they had learnt when working with equivalent fractions.
They had used the 'whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top' rule to convert some really tricky fractions to their equivalents. In addition to this, they were able to explain the differences between the numerator and the denominator.

Information was also given out about the Toma Children's Cancer Fund. We would everyone to look out for the tokens in the Evening Chronicle newspaper which we are collecting to help children and their families who have been affected by childhood cancers. Please support by looking in the newspaper and cutting out the vouchers. The box for the vouchers is in the Key Stage 2 entrance.

WOW!! WHAT A SPORTS DAY !!!

For the first time ever, Roman Road held their Sportsday at Gateshead Stadium.
The sun shone, the parents and supporters cheered wildly and above all the children showed a fantastic spirit as they raced aginst each other representing the original five Olympic continents.

From Reception to Year 6, everyone tried their best and showed lots of the Olympic values. An example of this was the courage and determination shown in the 400 metre races.

SPORTSDAYSTADIUM1.jpg

SPORTSDAYSTADIUM2.jpg

After three hours of sprinting, distance running, beanbag races, skipping and relays, the team from Africa were victorious. Well done to them and thank you to all the children and their parents that attended which made this a sportsday to remember.

SPORTSDAYSTADIUM3.jpg

A huge thank you must also go to Mrs Inkster who organised our amazing afternoon. Everyone will realise the time and effort that goes into sorting out something like this and our wider Creative Curriculum fortnight of events.

We are now looking forward to the Primary Athletics Festival where our top Key Stage 2 athletes will be representing the school against forty seven others back at the Stadium in July.

More photos of the day, including some from Key Stage One, will follow in the gallery section of the site.

ECO HEROES!

CIMG1219.JPG
This term, our Eco Council have been extremely busy! We have been planning to involve the whole school in a Climate Change Awareness Campaign which will be integrated in all parts of the curriculum in a creative way. In the weeks leading up to the Easter break, everyone will learn why our world is becoming warmer and how to look after it so future generations can enjoy it’s beauty. Our fab work will soon be published in the Climate Change Lead School Newsletters!

CIMG1202.JPG
In an assembly, we reminded all the children about our adopted polar bear and how these animals are being affected by Climate Change. Each class collects spare change in their own ‘Polar Bottle’ and so far we have raised £300!

Our Year 2, 3 and 4 classes have thoroughly enjoyed working with ‘Groundworks’ to make fantastic bird boxes and feeders as well as constructing an outstanding Bug Hotel! The Eco Council are preparing our gardens ready for planting so we can sell our own vegetables. Over the next couple of weeks, everyone in the school is working with ‘Nick the Chef’ from ‘Cooking for Life’ and Alan Barlow, our Bike-it officer to learn about food miles. We are working very hard at present to win the virtual bike race…last year we came fourth in the country! We are also collecting plastic bottle tops and working with local artists to produce recycled landscape art! Northumbrian Water will be popping into school to talk about water saving ideas. Local MP Ian Mearns recently visited our school and met our Eco Council! He was certainly impressed with how ‘Green’ we are!

It’s nearly time for Green Day 2012! The Eco Council are preparing to sell recycled crafts made in school to the local community during our Green Breakfast. Everyone will dress in green and all the food will be green. Money raised from the crafts will go towards supporting our Indian Orphanage…we have already helped raise in excess of £5000! Awesome!

We regret the inconvenience this may cause but for health and safety reasons we have had little choice.

Eco Success!

PC030519.JPG
We have recently had a whole school Eco Week which was a brilliant success! All children took part in Eco activities across the week and the school theme was 'Waste Not, Want Not!'

'Waste Not, Want Not' incorporated recycling, waste, water and energy which are all themes within the Eco Award. After receiving our Bronze and Silver Eco Awards last year, we are striving towards our Green Flag which we will hopefully receive in the Summer Term. Everyone rose to the challenge this year and included Eco issues within their Creative Curricular Themes. But in Eco Week we had a fantastic time. This is a list of activities we enjoyed:
*making recycled musical instuments
*making wind turbines
*making shelters using recycled canvas
*setting up recycling of paper towels
*making quality items from recycled items to sell on a stall to raise money for our orphanage/polar bears
*making bottle top flower garden decorations
*research about polar bears/reducing, reusing, recycling
*making a water filter
*pie charts and data handling about recycling and water usage in the home
*Cooking with leftovers alongside nick, our resident chef!
*Biking to school
*Making Eco eggs from recycled materials for a competition
*Washing cars with recycled water
*Picking up litter
*Weaving with plastic bags
*Using cans to make garden buddies
*Thinking about a life without energy
*Making collage patchwork quilts
*Alan's visit to classes to talk about Eco Issues

We finished the week with Green Day. We dressed up in green and went to a green breakfast in the Junior Hall. We ate green food and watched a video about our Indian orphanage. four people from Living Waters Church in South Shields have now visited the orphanage and handed over the £500 raised by Roman Road so far. It bought uniforms for the children and was greatly appreciated by the Tsunami orphans.
At the breakfast, Year 2's Recycling Retail raised £56.20 which will go towards supporting our orphanage and polar bears!

Well done to everyone for your unwavering support!!

Roll up, Roll up ... It's time for Book Week and the Circus Book Fair is here in town!
In addition to the exciting events we always have, this year, our children will receive circus training from a professional circus visitor who has actually worked in the travelling circus for 2 years. Alan, our Bike it officer will also be joining the junior children to work on some circus creative writing. It's going to be a fantastic week and an exciting end to this half term!

Dear Parents/Carers,

Book Week 2011 (14th-18th February)

It’s time for this year’s Book Week which has always been a fantastic and enjoyable time for the children as well as being supported by parents exceptionally well. There will be loads of events and loads of ways to get involved!

Bookfair
The Bookfair arrives in school on Monday 14th February and will be with us until Thursday. As always, it will be based in the Junior Hall and books, posters and stationery will be available to buy each night from 3.30pm. This year the theme is ‘Roll up, Roll up and read!’ (A Circus theme) and some of the books you can purchase are shown in the catalogue. There is always a great selection and the school also benefits from the fair. Last year the school received £300 which was put towards buying further Literacy resources. Children can bring their £1 off voucher which they received last Friday when they come to the fair. We will have a special visitor this year at the bookfair each night...I wonder who it could be?

Fun Afternoon (Tuesday 15th)
The children love this! This is an afternoon in celebration of Book Week where the children simply enjoy themselves. The Year 6s will be running this as an enterprise project and look after stalls selling old books/videos. We will also have various competitions to guess the name of the ‘cuddly clown’ etc. Children are free to bring in money on this day and spend it during the afternoon. The Book Fair will be open during the fun afternoon and there will be face painting which is always popular so fill in the form below if you do not wish your child to be painted! Thank you for all your generosity in sending books, toys, gifts and DVDs which you no longer want.

Non-uniform day
Children can get dressed up on Tuesday 15th to match the theme of our Circus Book Week. There will be prizes for the best costume! Anything linked with the Circus will be great. Your child could be a clown, trapeze artist, circus animal or ring master! This non-uniform day will be great fun.

Parent/Guardian & Child competition
Last year we ran a parent and child competition which proved very successful – a few parents and guardians proved to be budding writers! This year, we want you to write a poem/story/information booklet around the theme of ’Circus’. Your poem/story/information text could be about anything to do with Circus. Remember to decorate it then hand it in to your child’s teacher and they will pass it on to me. If you would prefer to be more creative, you could make a model of a circus instead with some information attached! There will, of course be prizes for the most inventive!

Sponsored Event
This year we will be doing a Sponsored Circus Writing Challenge set by each teacher around a Circus theme (Foundation Stage will learn a rhyme). Each child will bring home some talk homework linked with the sponsored challenge, so carers have the opportunity to give your child ideas to include in the writing. Sponsor forms and further details have been sent home with this letter. All money raised goes straight back into school funds. Last year this money was spent on buying Literacy Resources for KS2 which are used within our new ‘Pirate Writing’ initiative to raise writing standards in school. As always, children who raise the most amount of money will receive a fab prize!

I’m sure the whole week will be a great success. There will be loads of prizes and exciting events during the week. Let’s raise as much money as possible to buy further resources to boost our children’s learning and enjoyment in school.

Thank you, as always, for your continuing support.
Yours sincerely
Miss E Allen

Welcome to Our Chinese Restaurant

P1010762.JPG

As part of our theme of Celebrations, we have worked together to create a Chinese restaurant for our role play area. It is equipped with woks, menus, noodles, rice, take away menus, chinese good luck charms and so much more.

We are really lucky that Michelle's parents own restaurants and take aways, and have been able to help us set our own restaurant up, as well as offer us many chinese artefacts to look at.

This is our favourite role play area to date and we are experts at providing top quality Chinese food. Chow Mein anyone?

We have been making Chinese dragon puppets to display in our Chinese Restaurant. Intially we researched some of the colours that were traditional in Chinese dragons. Then there were lots of skills involved, such as cutting, paper folding, gluing, sticking and decision making.
Year One had great fun making them dance in the classroom to some Chinese dragon muisc

New Year Celebrations

happy-new-year-images1.jpg

Our theme this half term is Chinese celebrations.

We are comparing a European New Year and a Chinese one. We pretended we had our own New Year's party. First, we went outside just before midnight (not really, Mum's and Dad's!), counted down from ten and then shouted as loud as we could "Happy New Year!!!"

The celebrations continued with lots of hugs and handshakes and we sang Auld Lang Syne a traditional ScottishNew Years song that means we will forgive and forget what has happened in the previous year.

Finally, Jack was then chosen as he is tall, dark and handsome to be our first foot. He entered our classroom first to try and give us lots of Godd Luck. It's working so far!

Gingerbread Houses

PC240717.JPG

As part of our PSHE, working towards a goal. We worked in teams to design, make and decorate a gingerbread house. How amazing are they? Please pop into year One at any time to have a closer look.

We are very proud of our results but most importantly we learned lots about working towards a common goal. We needed to us effective teamwork, good listening and making compromises, these were all important to get the job done.

Christmas with Cooking 4 Life!

PB290637.JPG

Just before we broke up for our Christmas holidays, we were lucky enough to get the chance to work with Nick from Cooking 4 Life. We had a fantastic time making some Christmas muffins, using chocolate and cranberries. You are probably wondering what they looked like? Unfortunately they were so amazing we ate them and then remembered we hadn't taken a photograph. Oops! We also took the recipes home to try out at home.

Cooking 4 Life Website

PB290639.JPG

We had to measure lots of different ingredients, using different scales. Pouring the milk was really tricky.

PB290640.JPG

We were wonderful whiskers!

A great time was had by all, we love our cooking time. Mrs Inkster was also pleased as we made some very special cakes for her that were gluten free. She was delighted!!!

Please let us know if you tried to make them at home.

Indian Breakfast

P9280329.JPG
A BIG thank you to staff, children, parents and visitors who raised £250 for our Indian orphanage yesterday (Friday 14th January). The day was a massive success!

P9280333.JPG
Visitors included parents, who came for their second authentic Indian breakfast which included paranthas (pancakes) and mango jam, fruit and scrambled egg.
An artist worked with children from Year 1 to Year 6 making rangoli patterns. These are Indian floor patterns used as a welcome to Hindu gods in the Indian Culture.
Mrs Robson, our Eco Governor visited for the day and worked with the artist as well as visiting all classes!
Foundation Stage children had another visit from Sheila from Miss Allen's church who told an Indian story and painted faces and hands with tigers and mendhi patterns.
Sheila also led a whole school assembly and used balloon modelling to tell the Christian story of Creation and perform a magic trick to tell us that God loves us all equally. We saw pictures of the Indian orphans whose parents were the victims of the 2004 tsunami.
The £250 raised will be taken to India in February by 4 members of Miss Allen's church and it will be used to buy school supplies. Money raised by Living Waters Church will go towards the building fund for Pastor Emmanuel's secondary school in Malakapatnam in India!

Thank you again for your generosity!
Miss Allen

Christmas Cooking.

Nick from Cooking For Life has been in school doing Christmas cooking with all of the classes from Reception through to Year 6.

Year 5 made some delicious mince pies. They really enjoyed working with Nick and could explain everything that they had done.

The staff were delighted to be able to sample the lovely treats which Nick made with the various classes, including Christmas muffins, gingerbread biscuits, and my personal favourite (not that I am biased) the Year 5 mince pies.
A big thank you to Nick!

Future Climbers in the Making

PA030325.JPG

In PE we have been using a range of large apparatus to help us with our balancing and co-ordination. We have made tremendous progress over the term. Now everyone in the class is confident at climbing the big ladder!!!!

Other activities have included: using starting and finishing positions, balancing on different parts of the body, climbing up, down and over a range of apparatus in a variety of ways, and finally linking all of the movements together.

We have loved these PE lessons and can't wait to tackle the large apparatus in the future.

Unfortunately we have been unable to upload our DVD of Don't Worry, Be Happy onto the school website, but if you would like to see it, just pop in and ask. Mrs Cullen came for her own little performance and she was very impressed.

Are you ready for...Pirate Writing!

pirate.jpg
Don't forget. On Friday, we are dressing up as PIRATES!
We have challenges to face...and we will meet them head on!
We will become the BEST WRITERS IN THE WORLD!
We will be bringing home TALK HOMEWORK! Please help us with it because our writing on Friday depends upon it! ARRRGGGGHHH!

‘Pirate Writing’ is a whole school initiative adopted by Roman Road Primary School to improve writing standards. It is a strategy which emphasises the development of the writer’s voice. Children will be introduced to the concept:
‘If you can’t speak it…you can’t write it’
Using a variety of techniques, children are encouraged to ‘steal’ the best ideas to use in their own writing.

The main focuses are:
• 4 basic skills (GHASP: Grammar,Handwriting,Spelling,Punctuation)
• VCOP (Vocabulary,Connectives,Openers,Punctuation)
• Rainbow Reading and Writing using WoW words:
Red words WoW doing words (verbs)
Purple words WoW descriptive words (adjectives/adverbs)
Blue words WoW connectives
Orange words WoW openers
Green words WoW additional phrases and clauses
• Using OSIE (Openers, Senses, Imagery, Emotions)
• Stealing the best ideas from other writers
• Talk homework
• Assessment for Learning strategies:
(peer/self assessment, paired talk, questioning)
• Creativity & linking to Creative Themes – making the writing process meaningful
• Addressing all learning styles
• Specific Targets (of which the child is aware)
• Lots of praise and rewards
• Silence for writing (where appropriate)
• Tracking of progress

Pirate Writing culminates in a whole morning session every alternate week:
Lesson 1:‘Build up’ to writing using a variety of lively games/whole class modelling and planning/use of Rainbow Writing etc.
Lesson 2: ‘Pirate Writing’ session. The atmosphere of the room is altered to create an environment conducive to creativity.
We hope to become excellent writers and 'steal' all the best ideas...like pirates!

"I was amazed with my child's progress. The lesson gave me a great understanding of Read Write Inc" Leanne Johnson (Parent)

All about India in Eco Week!

P4220310.JPG
During the summer term 2010 as part of Eco Week, we took part in a creative curriculum theme about India. this was mainly to raise everyone's awareness of the problems faced by the country and the religious beliefs of the people. Sheila, Bethan and Nim (from Miss Allen's church) came to tell us about an Indian Orphanage we could support together.

P4220339.JPG
Sheila left us with a selection of Indian desserts which were very sweet. We learned that the children in the orphanage in Machilipatnam did not have sweets like this. Most of them were orphans due to the Tsunami of 2005. Pastor Emmanuel (the principal of the school) is a Christian who has asked us to raise money for these children so a secondary school can be built. We learned that the only clean water they receive is between 6am and 7 am
P4240400.JPG
Mrs Banergee taught us how to wear a sari. She taught us about the differences between schools in India compared to England.

Hello, my name is Fergus the Frog and I live in Year One with all of the children.

Each week I listen carefully to hear who has had fantastic Frog Factor and then I ask Mrs Inkster if I can go home with them for the weekend. It is now called Fergus Friday!

When I go home, I get to have lots of adventures with my friends and then they write all about it in my diary.

On the Monday we share my adventures with the rest of the class. I have been to two houses so far...I wonder who will be next? Could it be you?

Let me know if you think you have the FROG factor and why?

Love Fergus

E-Safety

A knowledge of e-safety is essential if your child goes online.

The internet is an amazing resource which has meant children have developed their understanding of the technological and wider world to a degree that just wasn't possible in the past.

However, there are hidden dangers that can lurk at the other end of the Facebook, Bebo, MSN etc accounts.

There are some very good resources about e-safety and we encourage all parents and carers to look at them.

Next Generation Learning have an online e-safety quiz for adults:

Chocolate Painting!!!!

As with all traditions, Year One bowed out in style with the infamous chocolate painting day. A great time was had by all. We were all very excited and had looked forward to it all week, it didn't disappoint.

The laughter could be heard down the corridors and many people felt the need to drop by - just to take a look! So with a little bit of madness and a whole lot of fun Year One leave for their holidays and get ready for their time in Year 2.

Thank you for an amazing year, you have been superb in all you have accomplished. Good luck for Year 2, I know Miss Allen will love you as much as I have. Mrs Inkster xx

Sports and Health Week Takes Place

Children from across the school took part in our annual Sports and Health week. What's more it isn't over yet. Due to the postponement of Sports Day last Tuesday, it will go on a little longer!!!
Karate%201.jpg

Over the week, children took part in various activities. The aim of the sports element was to try some sports that were new them.
Years 1 to 5 worked with Karate coaches, years 4 & 6 experienced rowing machines while all year groups including the nursery were able to tray sports such as hockey, tennis, golf, bowling, basketball and badminton amongst others. Hopefully some children will take up some of the sports.
Year 5 continued with their hula hooping whereas year 3 were trained in netball by a visiting coach.

Our visiting chef Nick, taught children from different classes how to cook healthily.
There were visits from the school nurse, Alan from Bike-It and also predestrian training.

To finish off the week some year 6 children planned an afternoon of coaching that they did with Reception.

The fantastic weather made a good week even better.

Lookout for photos in the gallery.

Tube Fido

P5140064.JPG

Lawrence brought a really unusual instrument to Roman Road during our Africa project. It is called the Tube Fido and is a string instrument.

We were taught how to reassemble the Tube Fido and had a go at playing a tune. Lawrence made it look very easy, as it was really difficult. We also sang a Ugandan song with Lawrence, the words were very tricky, so we hummed along instead.

Ghana Coil Pots

P5080001.JPG

Year One have made some fabulous clay pots made in the traditional Ghana way. In Ghana the women and girls make clay pots for cooking and cleaning. They make the pot with clay and start with the top, then adding the bottom once it has dried slightly in the sun. We had a great time and were very pleased with the results.

Today I made some new friends

Can you believe we have had the chance to hold a snake!!!!!!!

P5120023.JPG

Early Years and key Stage One had a fabulous time today and made lots of new friends - creepy crawly and slippery slimy friends.

Zoo Lab visited us all and brought a range of animals that could be found on the continent of Africa. We met toads, snakes, cockroaches, millipedes, snails, stick insects and finally a lovely cute bunny.

We learned all about their habitats and how they have adapted to suit their environment. Take a look at some of the animals we held. How brave were we?

Meet Harry the Hissing Cockroach. He is from the African country of Madagascar.

P5120011.JPG

This is Sammy the African land snail. It was gigantic!

P5120019.JPG

Twiggy is a stick insect. She can be found in many of the jungles in Africa.

Are you an Eco Eagle?

eagle.jpg
Get ready to launch into ECO WEEK!!
Week beginning 7th June 2010!

Get ready to launch straight into…
ECO WEEK
when you return after the half term holidays!

During the week beginning 7th June 2010, we will be learning how to become Eco Eagles!

Roman Road Primary School is embarking upon a journey to achieve our Green Flag Award. This is an internationally recognised award. During this year’s Eco Week, we will be launching Eco Themes in a BIG way and will hopefully achieve our Bronze and Silver Flags during the week.

As a school, we are already looking for ways to be more Eco friendly:
*Our School Council are also our Eco Council and Staff members include Mrs Lacey, Mrs Phillips, Mr Bradshaw and Miss Allen.
*Teachers are including ‘Green themes’ in their Creative Curriculum.
*We are brilliant at ‘Bike-it’
*Our garden club has been up and running for a while and the vegetables grown are very tasty!
*We have our Healthy School Award!

In order to improve further, we need to review the 9 Topics of the Eco Award:

Energy
Litter
Waste & Recycling
Water
Transport
Healthy Living
Biodiversity
School Grounds
Global Perspectives

The Theme of Eco Week this time is…

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
Our particular focuses will be:
India & Global Warming.

Aims of ECO WEEK :
*To create an understanding about Indian culture
*To make links and raise money for an Indian orphanage in Malakapatnam
*To raise whole school awareness of Climate change issues
*To sponsor a polar bear
*To devise a school Eco Code

Indian Orphange Information:
It’s a Christian school based in the middle of a Hindu community. The children are mainly orphans due to the Tsunami hit on December 26th 2004. The children are of the lowest caste system (or ‘untouchables’) and without education would end up living in the worst possible conditions. We want to help them build a school and keep in touch with them to find out about life in India.

Events during the week:
The children will be taking part in loads of activities during the week which will raise their awareness about Indian life and Climate change. An Indian expert will be talking to the children, a drama company will be visiting to tell an Indian story and a visitor will be doing art work with the children.
On Friday 11th June we are having a Green Day.
This is a national event and children can get dressed up all in green.
Please bring £1 and all the money raised will be sent to the Indian Orphanage.
If you would like to donate more it will be greatly appreciated.

How PARENTS/GUARDIANS can get involved:
*Encourage your child to bike-it to school during the week and bring your own bikes as well!
*Each class will be given a ‘polar bottle’ through the week. Any spare coppers you have, please send them into school and we use the money collected across the year to sponsor a polar bear.
*You are invited with your children to an Indian breakfast on Friday 11th June at 8am in the Junior Hall. The event is free, but if you would like to bring a donation for the orphanage/polar bear, there will be a collecting box available.

KEEP A LOOK OUT ON THE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT ECO WEEK!

Thank you for all your support...why don't you begin looking for ways in which YOU can become more eco friendly?

Jeeptastic!

P4280081.JPG

Our Year One African challenge is to make a safari role play area. We really wanted to include a jeep so we set about making one.

P4280083.JPG

It was very tricky to cut the card, but we managed to make two doors.

P4280084.JPG

We made headlights using tissue paper and strawberry boxes.

P4280087.JPG

We worked in teams to camouflage our vehicle.

P4280091.JPG

We had to mix lots of different colour greens for the camouflage.

We bet you will be amazed when you see our jeep at the showcase. Don't miss it...Friday 28th May at 1.15pm.

Palm Sunday

P3110836.JPG

This week we created a role play of Palm Sunday but we did it with a difference!

We were separated into three groups - costume designers, props and actors.

The costume designers were responsible for researching clothes that may have been worn in Jesus time using our Childrens Bible. They then had to dress the actors for their role.

The props people were responsible for making palm leaves, a donkey mask and tail.

The actors had to cast themselves into the role and then decide what they would say.

We had an amazing time and had to make so many decisions and choices. At first wefound this tricky but soon we were working as superb teams.

Our final play was amazing and we really enjoyed watching the actors perform the story of Palm Sunday.

Fire Fighter Visit

P3110833.JPG

We were very lucky this week to get a visit from Gateshead Fire Service. It is really important that we know the dangers around the home that can cause a fire.

We learned a rhyme to remind us what to do if there is a fire. Get Out, Call the Fire Brigade Out and Stay Out.

We watched a DVD of Fireman Sam who helped us remember the song as well as getting to dress up in a Firefighters Uniform. It was very funny but we learned how important all of the equipment and clothing is.

We were hoping for a visit from the fire engine but unfortunately it was called on a job. However a Fire Drill in school allowed us to check we knew what to do in a fire - we calmly left the school building and lined up sensibly. We had definitely been listening.

On Monday 15th March Year 1 astounded the audience at the Sage with our fabulous Flamenco dance. We received the biggest cheer and even managed to get our photograph in the local paper.

Our parents, grandparents, Mrs Mckeown and Mrs Inkster were so proud of us after all the hard work we have put in.

Mothers Day Madness!

P2280770.JPG

We had great fun cooking up some wonderful treats for our mums for Mothers Day.

Peppermint Pyramids in gold boxes were their surprise gift this year.

We were able to use our new skills in measuring when we had to measure the icing sugar and peppermint essence. Separating the eggs was very tricky and the icing sugar had the habit of jumping out of the bowls.

However we used lots of cookery skills and made a wonderful gift for our wonderful mums.

Cezanne Creations

P2130594.JPG

Paul Cezanne was a very famous French artist who painted lots of still life. Year One have been creating their own still life using photography and pastels.

We were shown a range of fruit, materials, pottery, jugs and a bottle of wine (aka Ribena bottle). In our groups we had to make choices as to what we wnated to use.

P2110556.JPG

Once we had chosen the objects we wanted to use in our still life, we had to arrange the objects in the same style of Cezanne. This was much trickier than we thought.

P2110565.JPG

After making our arrangement we took photographs and compared them to some of Cezanne's paintings.

P2110575.JPG

Next we used the still life and photographs to create our own still life picture. We chose pastels as it allowed us to blend colours much easier.

P2110559.JPG

We used a white pastel first to sketch the shapes onto the paper before we started adding colour.

P2120585.JPG

Our artwork is on display in our classroom and looks amazing!!

Please leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

Hieroglyphics

P2270761.JPG

Did you know the Egyptians used pictures and symbols for their alphabet? We do!

We are transforming our cloakroom into Ancient Egypt and decided that our old name cards were no use in Egypt. So we chose a famous Egyptian, artefact or building and then added our name in hieroglyphics. Aren't they amazing!!!

Ancient Step Pyramids

P2270764.JPG

Today we have been exploring how the Ancient Egyptians made pyramids. Unfortunately Mrs Inkster does not have the muscle to transport lots of stone into school so we relied on rough cut sugar cubes instead.

P2270751.JPG

We found that if we built up each section of the pyramid using squares and then layered them on top of each other it made quite an effective sugar pyramid. Anyone for coffee???

Mummy Who?????

P2250714.JPG

All of the school were very privilged to receive a visit from Carol an Egyptologist this week.

Carol brought lots of fascinating artefacts to show us and really helped us understand what it must have been like to live in Ancient Egypt.

Our favourite facts were the gorey details. Did you know before they mummified a dead body, they removed some of the internal organs and placed them in jars? How did they get the brain out?
Let us know if you can remember.

We also had great fun learning how they used the bandages and special creams and ointment to make a mummy. Who could possibly be the mummy in this picture? A prize to the first person to get it correct. (Please leave your answers in the comment box with your name.)

Did you learn anything else? Please let us know in the box below. At this rate we could all become Egyptologists.

Egyptian Sand Scene

P2250692.JPG

We are using all of the knowledge we have learned about Egypt in our play this week.

During play in the sand tray, two year 1 boys made an amazing Egypt scene. It included - the River Nile, pyramids, a temple, a boat and the Valley of the Kings. Can you spot them?

What a fantastic way of showing what Egypt might have looked like!

Posted by A Inkster at 11:03 AM | Discuss/Ask? (0)

Totally Terrific Tutankhamun!!!!!!

P2270762.JPG

During Egyptian week we have been learning all about the boy king Tutankhamun. We were fascinated and really enjoyed learning about the discovery of his tomb in the Valley of the Kings. We decided to design and make our very own Death mask. We think King Tut would love them - do you? Please leave a comment letting us know what you think.

P2240670.JPG

First we drew around our mask onto a piece of card. We had to place it well so that we left enough room for the headdress. Then we drew the headdress shape on the paper and cut it out. This was extremely tricky!

Then Mrs Inkster helped us to spray paint the masks. PHEW! what a stink - good job it was outside, we even managed to spray some of the grass.

P2250690.JPG

After we had cut out the headdress we chose foil and made a repeating pattern on the headdress. There were parts that were very tricky to do, like curving the strips of paper. Our teamwork was brilliant and we kept checking to see that our pattern was repeating. Then we trimmed round our mask so there was nohing hanging over the edge.

We chose a colour we had not used to be the centre piece of the mask. They look amazing. Everyone who has visited our class this week are amazed Year 1 produced such skilful masks. Please pop along and have a look - they are now on display in our Egyptian cloakroom.

Yummy Mummy Sandwiches

P2240666.JPG

This week Year One received a letter from the Head of the Mummy Society in Egypt. They asked our help with making party food for the Annual Mummy Ball.

P2240651.JPG

We worked together with a partner to make some spready cheese sandwiches. We had to think carefully about which time connective to use (first, then, next, finally). We also had to make sure we had included a bossy verb that would tell the mummy chef exactly what to do (spread, put, serve).

P2240654.JPG

Once we had made the sandwiches and talked through each instruction, we used a cutter to make the sandwiches look like mummies. As all good chefs do, we tried our sandwiches and they were delicious.

The next day we wrote detailed instructions to the mummies on how to make our fabulous sandwiches. Our writing was superb and we remembered all of the connectives and bossy verbs.

We have sent our instructions in a book to the Head Chef of the Mummy Ball and we are waiting to hear how they liked them. Perhaps you too could try making yummy mummy sandwiches at home.

Christian Visitors!

Sheila and Katie came to see us today. They are from Miss Allen's church (Living Waters Church).
P1010524.JPG
As part of Interfaith Week, Sheila and Katie came to talk to us about their faith. They visited all our classrooms and led a whole school assembly. Sheila made a banana appear from nowhere in a magic trick. She wanted us to eat dog food! Don't worry parents...it was only chopped up mars bars and jelly with a different label on. She told us that we should never judge people by their outward appearance!

P1010527.JPG
We heard the story of Frd with the wobbly legs (the paralysed man story in the Bible) and asked Sheila questions about what she believed. What a fab day! She wants to come and visit again!

Magnificent Magnets

PB200160.JPG

Year One have been learning all about magnets.

We learnt about horseshoe and bar magnets and found out that they can attract and repel.

At first we tested lots of different materials to find out what was magnetic. We thought that all metal was magnetic, but then when we tried our magents on lots of different magents, and we found out that not all metals were magnetic.

In fact the object needs to be made from Iron or Steel in order to be magnetic.

We had great fun exploring our classroom and finding magnetic objects.

And the winner is....

PB200150.JPG

Year One have worked incredibly hard on their homework project to build a castle. Mrs Inkster was amazed at everyone's efforts.

On Wednesday, Mrs Jones and Alun (our Bike It Officer) had the difficult position of choosing who had won. After much deliberation they chose.

1st place (£10 voucher to Cineworld) - Brian Swindale
2nd place (£5 viucher to Cineworld) - Kieran Brydon
3rd place (Large selection box) - Connar Ainsley and Joe Corbett

All the runners up received a selection box as they had worked tremendously hard.

A big thank you to all the parents who supported their children, I hope you had as much fun as the children did.

And finally, a huge thank you to the children of Year One, you truly are the best in the world!!! I am so pleased to be your teacher.

GREAT GOBLETS

Today we have been making goblets, like those that would have been used in a castle.

PB110122.JPG

PB110123.JPG

We used air hardening clay. First we rolled and cut the clay. We shaped it into a bowl shape for the top. Then we made a stem for the goblet. Finally we added patterns to the clay. We can't wait to paint them when they are dry.

PB110118.JPG

Posted by A Inkster at 7:28 PM | Discuss/Ask? (2)

What did we want those rolls for?

PB050112.JPG

We have had a great time using the MANY rolls that we brought into school. We have turned them into fairy princesses and knights. We are looking forward to displaying them with our castles.

Super Stained Glass Windows

PA290047.JPG

When we visited Raby Castle we saw some stained glass windows. After we returned to school we created some of our own.

First we got an OHP / acetate sheet.
We then tore up pieces of tissue or cut cellophane.
Next we glued this to the acetate sheet.
We made sure there were no spaces between the colours.
After that we glued over the top to make a varnish and to stick down all of the edges.
Then we had also been learning about different 2D shapes in numeracy, so we chose from a selection of shapes the frame we would like for the window.
Finally we glued these together and displayed them on our corridor windows.

They look fantastic!

Look No Stabilisers!!!

SDC11108.JPG

Alan came into school and has taught us how to ride our bikes without stabilisers.

Alan is our Bike It Officer and he is fab! We love him! Especially when he shows us how to ride our bikes without stabilisers. Some of the children from Year 1 and Reception had a great time learning. Check out the gallery for more photographs.

Here are some handy hints if you are learning to ride your bike.

1. Take your pedals off. - This helps you learn how to balance the bike.
2. Push yourself around without pedals, trying to stay balanced.
3. When you have clicked, with your balance, put those pedals back on.
4. Now using your feet, push yourself off 5 times.
5. After you have done 5 big pushes, get those feet on the pedals and PEDAL.

These helpful tips should get you going in no time.

Remember safety is vital. ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!

Raby Castle Visit

SDC11059.JPG

Year 1 and year 2 had a tremendous time at Raby Castle in Durham.

SDC11061.JPG

Year One have been learning all about Castles and Fairytales, whilst Year Two have been Time Travelling. Therefore Mrs Inkster and Miss Allen combined our two classes for an exclusive visit to Raby Castle.

Raby castle is in Durham and is the home of Lord Barnard. He was at home the day we visited as he still lives there.

We saw some amazing sights, ranging from the Red Deer who were in the castle grounds, the castle kitchens, the Entrance Hall, Great Hall and Octagon Room.

We really wish we could show you some photographs of inside the castle but there was a no photography rule. However you can click on the link below which will take you to Raby Castles website. There you will find photos of the rooms we visited.

http://www.rabycastle.com/categoryrender.asp?categoryid=3885

After our tour of the castle, and lunch in the Servants Hall, we were lucky enough to be able to play in the grounds of the castle.

The gardens were amazing. We had so much fun, playing hide and seek, making up fairytales and playing sharks on the lawns.

Before long it was time to go home. We all wanted to stay but we know our parents would have missed us, so we hopped on the bus and headed back to school, with many amazing memories of our castle trip.

Check out some other photos of our castle trip in the gallery.

A Flying Figo Visit

P9270003.JPG

Year 1 and Year 2 were surprised to have a new classmate.

Mrs Lacey, our teaching assistant had been telling us all about her parakeet. She even convinced us it could sing the theme tune to Doctor Who!!!

Imagine our surprise when we came into school and found a parakeet in our classroom. He was beautiful. We spent some time trying to think of as many describing words as we could. Whilst we were talking Figo chatted away in the background. We are still waiting to find out about Doctor Who though, as he wasn't in the mood for singing. After half an hour Mr. Lacey came and collected him as he would have been very unsettled in a new environment.

We hope to see you again soon Figo!

Estimating Experts

P9020022.JPG

In Year One we have been learning how to estimate and then check how close we were by counting.

Here we are working with our partners. In our class we don't have partner 1 and 2 - we have Ant and Dec as they make such a good team.

In this activity we were selecting cubes, estimating how many and then counting. At first we were not very close but the more we practised the better we got! Now we are Estimating Experts!

Fairytales and Castles

princessknight.jpg

The theme for Autumn in Year One is Fairytales and Castles.

This term we will be reading lots of fairytales and using this as a basis for our work on castles.

Literacy

We will be concetrating on the stories of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Princess and the Pea and Jack and the Beanstalk. We will be writing menus, job lists, sequencing stories, speech bubbles and much much more.

From the 14th September, children will also be streamed into groups for Read Write Inc. Children will attend their Read Write Inc groups Monday to Thursday, Friday we will be writing creatively.

Numeracy

In Numeracy we will be forming numbers and counting objects upto 20. In Shape, Space and Measures, we will be measuring and comparing the size, length and weight of objects. To link with our topic we will be solving 'real life medieval' problems such as paying taxes.

Science

We will be sorting and naming materials and discussing their properties. We will also look at Birds of Prey that were used in castle life and this will also link to our work on the Red Kite.

ICT

We will be concentrating on basic skills such as logging onto the computer independently, developing mouse control skills such as clicking and dragging an object. We will be using a variety of programs such as Kid Pix4 and Google Earth.

History

What is a castle? What was castle life like? Name the parts of a castle? What happened inside the castle? These are some of the questions that will be answered across this term. We will also be learning about St. George and the Dragon and William the Conqueror.

Geography

We will be comparing the locations of castles and the physical features that support where a castle is situated. We will be designing our own fictional maps of a country as well as looking at the jobs in a castle.

Art

Will be painting Medieval portraits and making pasta frames. Weaving using simple frames. Stained galess windows and making a clay goblet.

Design and Technology

We will be making cardboard kinghts and princesses, designing our own coat of arms, constructing castles with construction kits, designing a penant flag, making simple swords and castle cakes.

As part of a homework project children will be asked to design and make a castle at home to bring in for a competition. We hope also to set up a market stall to sell our cakes, just like in real castle life.

Music

We will be listening to medieval music, naming instruments of the time and looking at high and low notes using bottles.

PE

We will be concentrating on balancing using large and small apparatus. Juggling with bean bags and balls like a castle jester. Learning social dances such as the Hokey Cokey and maybe even the Waltz (who knows?).

PSHE

Using SEAL we will be concentrating on changes that happen in our lives. We will be making a set of rules for our classroom and for our castle.

RE

Our RE topic is all about Belonging - to a family, class, school etc. We will look at baptisms and weddings.

Year One Day Trip

Finally we will be going on a visit to Raby Castle in Durham (pictured below), where we will be getting our own personal tour of the castle, dressing up as Lords and Ladies, eating in the servants hall, visiting the deer in the Deer garden and even having time to play in the children's play area. This is a very exciting trip and we are really lucky to get access to the castle...more information to follow when we are back to school.

What to look forward to in Year One this summer...

Year One are in for a super summer term, read more to find out what's in store

superheroes.jpg

Each morning we will be continuing our fantastic work in Read Write Inc. We are making such fantastic progress and we are very proud of all we have achieved.

In numeracy we will be continuing to work on number bonds to 10; recording addition and subtraction in written form; find halves and quarters; count repeated groups of the same size; recording information in lists and tables.

Our overall creative theme this half term is Superheroes.

superheroes.jpg

We will look at fictional super heroes portrayed by the media. Look at people from the past and present and how they are ‘real-life’ heroes, both in our community and family. Culminating in how we can make our world a better place – identifying problems, finding real solutions and designing our own superhero identities.

ScienceWhat makes humans super?
• Recognising main body parts
• Five senses
• Exploring, testing and recording what our bodies can do
• How does food and exercise keep our bodies healthy.

Geography
• Look in detail at people and jobs and real life heroes in our locality.
• Through observation and fieldwork surveys solve local issues and become real life
super heroes.

History

• Looking at real life super heroes from the past.
• How have they made the world a better place – Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling.
• Who is your hero in your family and why?
• Ask and represent findings in a variety of ways.

Art

• Using different media – pastels, paint, collage, photography and sculpture.
• Look at super hero artists – Picasso, Van Gogh.
• Looking at line drawings from comic books

Design and Technology

• Designing a super hero fruit smoothie.
• Designing a super hero costume.
• Learn how to follow and write instructions
• Use tools safely
• Evaluate designs.

Music

We will be learning about different musical instruments, composers and styles of music.

P.E.

This half term we will be doing gymnastics and games.

ICT

Using Word to change the appearance of text.
Opening and saving a document.

PSHE

Relationships and Changes

RE will be taught separately from the superheroes topic.

Within this term we will also be holding a Superhero Convention (date to be confirmed), parents wil be invited into school to see the fantastic work we have covered and also help us celebrate our achievements with the handing out of Super hero awards.

So we are going to be busy, busy, busy.

Easter Egg Hunt

Children in Years 1, 2, 3 and MSB had a lovely surprise on the last day of term.
P3140131a.JPG

The Easter bunny had hidden little tokens all around the school field and yard. In return for these tokens were chocolate eggs. Miss Stubbs, Mrs Inkster, Mr Slane, Mrs Cairns and Miss Parkin helped us find them. Rayne managed to find one of the special tokens which got him an extra big egg. We all had great fun!! We hope you all have a lovely Easter.

Memorable Mothers Day Presents

ff.JPG

How fantastic are our Mothers Day Presents! Wondering if we really made them all by ourself? Check out how we did it.

measuring.JPG

We knew we wanted to make our frames a square shape. We know that squares have four sides the same length. So we decide a good size would be 14cm. Next we had to measure 14cm on our piece of wood, four times for each length.

sawing.JPG

We then clamped our piece of wood in the vice and very carefully began sawing the wood, making sure our fingers were well out of the way. Mrs Inkster was very worried she would be sending someone home with 9 fingers, but we were extremely careful and followed the instructions well.

Then we used sand paper to get rid of any rough edges. After this we had help from Mr Slane and his class who used the glue guns to stick our picture frames into the shape of a square. The glue gun meant the frame was strong and the glue dried very quickly.

spray%20painting.JPG

We then added a card back and a photograph of ourselves to make our Mum's day extra special. We decided that a good finishing touch would be to add crepe paper around the edges. This was very tricky but we all perservered and did an excellent job.

crepe%20paper.JPG

Also we added a heart with a message to our Mums on the back. Finally we drilled a hole in the frame and added a piece o dowelling so our frames stood up.

Then it was time to take them home and find a place to hide them until Mothers day. The response from our Mums' was brill! We are very proud of what we managed to achieve and we are still only 5 and 6... future carpenters in the making!

Punch and Judy Puppets

a%20stick%20puppet.JPG

We have made Punch and Judy stick puppets.

First we used some saws to cut a piece of dowelling. This left the edges really rough so we used a piece of sandpaper to smooth the edges.

website%20sanding.JPG

Next we used a template of a body to keep the shape of our puppet.

cutting%20body.JPG

After that we cut lots of different materials to make the puppets clothes.

Finally we played with them making our own puppet stories. It was great fun!

Control Technology with Bee Bot

website%20beebot.JPG

On Monday we visited Gateshead's City Learning centre near the Metrocentre. We were there to learn all about giving directions and inputtng inormation into Bee Bot.

First we all showed Anne that we knew our directions - forward, backwards, left and right. We practised giving ourselves instructions - e.g. going forwards 3 steps snd turning right. Then she introduced us to Bee Bot, a busy yellow bee. We learnt how to input the correct information and then pressed go. We used this to make Bee Bot move around lots of different mats and ICT programs on the interactive whiteboard.

It was a great afternoon out!

All of the information we have learned, we have been using in our numeracy work this week. Go on, give us a direction and see if we can follow it - you'll be amazed how good we are.

The Three Little Pigs

3_little_pigs.jpg

Year One have written some fantastic stories about the Three Little Pigs.

First we listened to Mrs Inkster tell the story using actions. Then we repated the story a few times with her, joining in all the actions. Next we split into talking partners and retold the story. Then we snowballed with another group and told the story again.

Using different actions for different connectives in the story, it helped to keep us on the right track.

website%203%20pigs.JPG

In this picture we are doing the action for "Unfortunately, a wolf came creeping by.."

Finally we wrote our stories. They were magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have been displayed in Key Stage One for all to see. If you would like a loook - just pop by and see them.

Collecting Data

website.JPG

In Numeracy we have been using questions to collect data. This photo shows some examples of our work. Can you guess what the questions were?

We used the information we collected to give us facts. We then turned it into bar charts in the ICT suite. We were very impressed wih how well we could use this information to asnswer further questions.

Welcome to Year One

Come and have a look around our classroom and see what we have on display.

toy%20shop.JPG

This is our toy shop and museum. We love playing in here, but what do we learn? We have made silhouettes of our favourite toys, used chalk to paint the other half of an old toy. We have set up our own toy museum and are learning how to use money in the shop. In ICt we took photographs of different toys close up. We have made a guessing game of what they toys are by lifting the flap. Finally, not forgetting science we are discovering how things move.

winter%20wonderland.JPG

This is a photograph of our cloakroom. We turned it into a Winter Wonderland. Some of the work displayed includes adjectives that describe the cold, instructions how to make a snowman, glitter icicle spirals, and some great photos of us in the snow.

When we were learning all about time, we used the story What Time Is It Mr. Wolf and this was the focus of our display. We each made a clock by putting the numbers in the correct place and then adding an hour hand and minute hand. We also included some examples of the clocks we had completed in the lesson.

winnie%20the%20witch.JPG

Our Winnie the Witch display shows us some examples of our writing. We had to write a sentence about Winnie the Witch. We were very proud of our work but can't believe how much we have improved since then.

art%20area2.jpg

This is our art area. It shows the work we did on colour mixing. We mixed the primary colours on a wheel and then added white to one colour to see what happened. We also thought of words that described colour.

We hope you have enjoyed having a little look around our classroom. We love it!

Meet Christine

christine.JPG

This is Christine. She is a very old doll. 56years old! She belongs to Mrs McLeod (Mrs Inkster's mum), who kindly brought her into school to talk to us about toys in the past.

old%20toys.JPG

Mrs McLeod got her doll when she was the same age as Year One children. She even had a photogrpah to show us of her playing outside her house with Christine. It was a black and white photograph.

We learnt that Christine was a very special doll. She was one of the first walking and talking dolls. If you tipped her up she said "Mama." Mrs Mcleod played with her lots as she wasn't as lucky as us, and only ever had one doll. She used to get her mum to make clothes and hats for her, but most of them are lost now.

We were very pleased to meet Christine as she helped us learn about toys 50 years ago. Next week we are visiting the Toy museum in Tynemouth where we will see toys even older. We can't wait.

Terrific Toy Time

kaleidoscope.jpg

Year one have been learning all about toys from the past and present

We have had great fun this afternoon, making kaleidoscopes and buliding toys that have to move around a maze.

This is really helping develop our ICT skills. We are having to click, drag and drop as well as follow on screen instructions. In Build a Toy we are having to give our toy control commands to beat the bad toy and stop it from draining our power.

Winter Wonderland

edited%20snow.JPG

The magic of Christmas is fast approaching!

Year One have been using the topic of winter in their writing, art and ICT work over the last few weeks. We have even created our own Winter Wonderland in our classroom. So you can imagine how excited we have been today to see all of the snow.

This morning we decorated the Christmas tree and then just before lunch went outside to have our photos taken. It was beautiful and there was so much snow. We are very excited. This afternoon we are hoping to be able to play out just before hometime. Then it's off home and sledges out!!!

We are the best!!!!!

PB050090.JPG

Year One have tremendous success at Heworth in multi-skills challenge.

PB050083.JPG

Year One were transported to Heworth on Wednesday where we were very excited to be participating in a Heworth Grange Cluster Multi-skills event. The children were competing against schools from The Drive, Bill Quay and White Mere.

Mrs Inkster and the children were all very excited and ready for all of the challenges that lay ahead. Each child was put into a team and participated in every activity. By the end of the morning we were exhausted.

Nervous tension filled the sports hall as we waited to find out where each team had been placed. Mrs Cairns team were a runner up team, Mrs Wilson's Team C were placed 2nd and Mrs Inkster's Team B came first. Roman Road got the top two spots going to prove we truly are the best year One in the world!

Mickey needs an umbrella!

PA140080.JPG
Year One have been communicating via Mickey Mail with Mickey mouse in Florida. Unfortunately on one of the days the weather over there was heavy rain and Mickey did not have a suitable umbrella. How did we help him?

PA140081.JPG

Mrs Inkster had provided each group with a range of different materials. We then stretched each of the materials over a clear jar. After that we used a syringe to drop water onto the materials. If the water went through the material into the jar we knew it wasn't waterproof and therefore no good for an umbrella.

Finally we discovered the cellophane and bubble wrap were waterproof and quickly emailed Mickey our results. He was extremely pleased at our quick response and him and his friends quickly made a waterproof umbrella for the weather.

P4300091.JPG

Roman Road have been hitting the press lately. We are lucky enough to be the 100th school to adopt a Red Kite. We have been featured on teletext TV.

We have named our Red Kite - Centurion. All the classes will be able to see a photo of Centurion along with a pack of information all about Red Kites.

Year One were happy to show us the life size model of a Red Kite. We can't wait to be able to visit him.

RECYCLE ROBOT

P9090017.JPG

We have been sorting, organising and recycling materials in year one.

The whole school have focussed on the environment this term and we have been particularly looking at recycling materials.

We named and sorted materials. We have discussed whether they are natural or man-made. Are they dull or shiny? Magnetic or non-magnetic?

We have also looked at the importance of recyling materials.

Did you know it takes at least 300 years for a plastic bottle to degrade? This means lots of our rubbish in landfill sites will be there for hundreds of years.

To remind us all about the importance of recycling, year one made a robot out of recycled rubbish. We have displayed it in the key Stage One hall along with our own individual robots. We looked very carefully at the materials and decided which were most suitable.

Please help year one and RECYCLE YOUR RUBBISH!

It's A Jungle in Key Stage One

PA020036.JPG

We are really lucky to have a freelance artist working in our school on a Thursday.

Lynda Nelson an artist and book illustrator came into school a few weeks ago to talk to Key Stage One about brightening up their building. We looked at lots of different photos and themes and eventually decided on a jungle.

Over the next few weeks Lynda will be working in our school. We will try and update the website regularly so you can see how it progresses.

Baptising Beth Ella

PA010021.JPG

Year One visited St.Andrews Church yesterday to baptise their baby doll.

We had fantastic weather to walk to church yesterday. Mrs Inkster, Mrs cairns and Mrs Miller helped Year One celebrate the baptism of their baby doll Beth Ella. Year one have been learning all about new beginnings and belonging to the Christian church.

We watched a video of a baptism but we wanted to experience the real thing. Father Alan was kind enough to book us in for the real thing.

We chose our own vicar who was lucky enough to be dressed up for the occasion.

PA010020.JPG

We all made promises to look after the baby and the parents and godparents went to the front of the church to make their promises to God.

PA010009.JPG

The sign of the cross was made on Beth Ell’s head using some oil.

We then went to the back of the church where the font was located.

PA010019.JPG

Father Alan showed us how to change Leam Lane tap water into holy water, by blessing it and making a cross in the water. A shell was then used to baptise the baby because a shell was used to baptise Jesus in the river Jordan. And so Beth Ella was given her name.

We then went back to the front of the church, where Ella’s parents were presented with a lighted candle from the vicar.

PA010026.JPG

Then it was time for family and friends to have their photos taken with the special baby girl. First were the Godparents.
PA010029.JPG

Next the doting Grandparents.
PA010028.JPG

And finally the rest of the family who attended the special celebrations.
PA010030.JPG

We said thank you to Father Alan and Mrs Inkster was able to press the button to ring the church bells. It was then back to school where we continued the celebrations with a party and enjoyed a lovely piece of christening cake.

Check out all of the photos from our visit in the gallery, Year One file.

Chocaholics Galore!!

chocolate%20chops.JPG

Our last day in Year One. We were all very sad to be leaving Year One and Mrs Inkster was very sad to see us leave. But we decided it was time to have some fun. So we set to work chocolate painting. It was messy! It was sticky! It was scrumptious and fun!!!!!!!!!

chocolate%20painting.JPG

First we used the chocolate to paint pictures or hand prints. Then when mrs Inkster said we went wild! We were able to lick our fingers and enjoy the chocolate. We loved it! We are sure you can tell how much fun we had by the pictures. More pictures will be uploaded into the Year One Gallery when the chocolate sets.

chocolate%20surprise.JPG

Apologies to our Mums and Dads for any chocolate on our uniform - but mucky kids are happy kids and chocolaty kids are just fantastic.

Thank you to all of the children and parents for making this a great year.

Symmetrical Shapes

This week in Year One we have been looking at symmetry. It is a very hard subject but Mrs Inkster thinks we are fantastic at it.

P1010855.JPG

First we began by taking lots of paper squares and rectangles. We experimented by folding the paper in half lots of different ways. When we had folded it, we opened it up and drew a line down the fold. Then, with our partners we looked very carefully and asked two questions:

1. Were they the same size?
2. Were they the same shape?

If they were this means that they were symmetrical.
We then used lots of other different shapes to see if they were symmetrical. We found that some shapes had lots of lines of symmetry but others didn't have any.

P1010859.JPG

We extended this work by painting and cutting symmetrical pictures. We folded our paper in half and then painted on one side of the paper. Folded the paper again and pressed hard so the image would print. This created a symmetrical picture.

P1010858.JPG

More tricky was cutting a symmetrical picture. Again we had to fold the paper in half and then remember to cut through both sheets of paper at the same time. Some of us created lots of confetti at first but then we soon got the hang of it.

P1010860.JPG

We are now officially experts on symmetrical shapes and pictures.

Fancy a holiday this year, come and book at our travel agents excellent prices on offer!

P1010857.JPG

To link in with our topic of travel and places around the world we have made our role play area into a travel agents and airport.

We have sorted all the travel brochures into the different destinations we might like to visit. Then you can get yourself a booking form and with the travel agents help, they will book your holiday. Tickets for the plane, train , ferry or coach are issed straight away so there is no hanging about for the post. Passports can also be issued here.

If you don't fancy a long holiday you can always book a day trip, there are many places on offer like the war museum, natural history museum, boating trips and many more.

P1010856.JPG

Please remember before entering the airport to have all your luggage clearly labelled as it will be checked by security. It then makes it's way along our conveyor belt and onto the plane. Don't forget to get your passport stamped. Then, take a seat in our departure lounge and read all about Barnaby Bear in one of our books.

If you have time you can always fill in a postcard and post it in the post box or alternatively you can admire the fantastic chalk pictures we created using only half a picture from a holiday destination.

Sounds exciting doesn't it! We love it!

Mrs Miller visits Year One

Mrs%20Miller.JPG

Did you know Mrs Miller went to Roman Road Primary school when she was little? She visited Year One this week to talk to us all about her time at Roman Road primary school.

We have been learning all about schools in the past. We thought of three questions each we would ask Mrs Miller. We wrote them down and even used question marks. On Tuesday after lunch Mrs Miller came to visit.

We were all ready with our questions. She was very impressed with them. Some of the questions we asked were:
1 Did you ever get the cane?
2 Did you have a register?
3 What were your teachers called?
4 Did you use paper towels?
5 Did you write on chalk boards?
6 What did you play with?
7 Did you do Read Write Inc?
8 Did you do swimming lessons on the floor?
9 What did you wear?
10 What lessons did you like?

Mrs Miller answered all of our questions. Then she showed us some of the games she played at school. They were:

cannonball2.JPG
Cannonball

Pick up sticks

Chucks

top.JPG
Spinning Top

2 and 3 Baller

Lacky Bands

We are getting so good at knowing all about schools in the past and hopefully we will learn a little more about them in the Summer when we go on a school trip.

Playground games from the past

Marbles.JPG

In Year One we are studying schools for our history topic. In this picture we had great fun playing marbles. It was much harder than it looked to get close to the jack.

We have been looking at how schools have changed. We have looked at the uniforms the children wore, what the lessons were like and the terrible punishments the children received if they were naughty.

This afternoon we went outside and played some playground games from the past. These also included Mrs Inkster, Mrs Cairns and Mrs Dunn's favourite games from when they were little.

P1010842.JPG

In this photograph the girls are enjoying skipping and chanting rhymes at the same time. Mrs Cairns loved to skip and she even gave us a demonstration.

P1010852.JPG

Some of the children enjoyed trying to roll the hoops around the yard. We have plastic hoops but they used to be made of metal or wood.

P1010847.JPG

Mrs Inkster's favourite games was elastic bands or "lacky bands". She showed us how to tie them together and then we played games with them. You had to jump really high.

P1010843.JPG

Mrs Dunn showed us al how to play cats cradle. We found it extremely tricky but with a little help some of us managed to do the first one.

P1010850.JPG

P1010853.JPG

We had a great afternoon and look forward to finding even more interesting facts about schools in the past.

Celebrating success in Literacy!

We love reading and spelling!

All of the infants in Roman road are working on reading and spelling their 300 key words. We learn them as part of our homework. It is very tricky, but our teachers have made it easier for us by splitting the words into groups. We have Copper, Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

P1010003.jpg

Every time we achieve and award, we receive a certificate in whole school celebration assembly on Friday.

Beans, Seeds and Plants

In Year One we have been learning all about plants.

We have been looking at the parts of the plant and learning their names and the jobs they do. Mrs Inkster is so impressed with our knowledge and she thinks we have green fingers.

We have also planted broad bean and sunflower seeds. They are growing fantastic and it is now like a jungle in our classroom. We are hoping to take our broad bean plants home soon. The sunflowers are going to be planted around the school and we are then going to measure them in maths and see who has grown the largest sunflower.

Keep an eye out and see if you can spot them.
Photos to follow soon.

Tens and Ones

twelve.JPG

Today we have been using some exciting equipment to help us count in tens and ones.

We have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones. First we thought about how many tens there were and then how many ones. This means that twelve has 1 ten and 2 ones. Then we used base equipment to show the correct amount.

It was tricky at first because we all kept saying we didn't have enough ones. Thankfully Shannon knew how to do it and she showed us how to work it out. After that we were great and could even partition 59 and then show it with our base.

We are really trying hard in Year One.

Weaving

Look at our weaving! We have been learning all about different materials and how they can be used in art.

weaving%20work.JPG

We started by looking very carefully at pieces of fabric with a magnifying glass. We could see that the material had lines going down as well as across. We experimented with the techniques of weaving using sugar paper.

pm%20weaving.JPG

Mrs Inkster told us this was called the weft and the warp. We got a weaving board and made the warp with wool.

aj%20weaving.JPG

We were then given lots of different pieces of fabric to use in our weaving. We had to carefully measue our lengths so that they were longer than the board. Then we got going with our designs. It was tricky to remember if we had to go over and under, or under and over. But we got there in the end with lots of help from our partners.

We will hopefully be showing our work around school. Come and have a look.

We have been retelling the story of the Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.

After reading the story and enoying playing in the role play area, we got to work writing the story using the main points. We amazed ourselves and shocked Mrs Inkster and Mrs Cairns at how fantastic our work turned out to be. We have displayed them in the classroom for all to see, but we hope you enjoy reading these two excellent stories now. Well done Paige and Ellen!

The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch

LHK2.JPG

In Year One we are using te story of The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage to help us with our science, literacy and ICT.

We began by reading the story which everyone in class enjoyed. We shared our ideas on what should go in the role play area and decided on Mrs Grinling's kitchen, a boat to cross to the lighthouse and a comfy settee for Mr. Grinling in the lighthouse.

In the kitchen we can prepare healthy meals for each other. Whilst in the boat we can go fishing, (these fish have words on them we can practise reading). Finally in the lighthouse area we can use torches and stick puppets to retell the story, as well as using different filters to change the colours of the light.

In art and design we made our own telescopes and binoculars. As well as this we made collages of the food that Mrs. Grinling sent to her husband in the lighthouse and we have then attached this on a line just like Mrs Grinling.

We are having great fun in our new role play area. We even have a basket and Hamish the cat!

Across Key Stage One and Year 3 we are using a great new reading and writing scheme.

RWI%20IWB.JPG

Every day we are reading and writing with our partners and teaching sticks.

We start the day by learning a new phoneme - this is the sound made by a letter or group of letters.

We then move onto our speed sounds - this is practising reading every phoneme we have learnt so far at speed.

Then we work out the green words with our partner - these are the words that can be blended.

Red words follow - these are words that have grotty graphemes and can't be sounded out.

Next we read the book using a teaching stick to point to the words. We help each other lots.

Finally we concentrate on using the phonemes and our knowledge of the book to complete writing tasks.

All of our teachers are so impressed with our progress and we show our achievements with lots of celebrations. Some of our celebratios are King Kong, marshmallow clap, L'oreal, Elvis, lorry driver and many more. Why not ask for a demonstration we would love to show you and share our success?

Traffic Survey

traffic%20count.JPG

Year 1 have carried out a traffic survey.

www.hedgehogs.gov.uk

In Year One this half term our Geography topic is road safety. In class we have been talking about the importance of staying safe near roads. We decided we needed to know how to tell if a road was busy. We compiled our ideas which were looking at the road, listening to the noise of the traffic and finally by counting how many cars were on it. We used a carefully designed chart to record any cars, buses, bikes, vans, lorries and motorcycles that passed. In partners one person took the role of observer (looker) whilst the other recorded the findings (ticker). We really enjoyed counting the traffic and we made a graph of what we found.

Find out more information and play road safety games by clicking on the link.

Doubling numbers

Number%20bonds%20to%2010%20size.JPG
This week we have ben learning all about doubling.

In class we have been finding lots of ways to remember double numbers. Red and blue group used cubed and then recorded their findings on a sheet. Green and yellow group used dominoes, they then recorded their answers. Envoys from each group moved to another group nd checked to see if their findings were the same. We are getting really good at envoying and checking each other's work.

Reading Around the Solar System

In Key Stage One we are rewarding reading by giving each child some rocket fuel!

Every child has their own rocket. In our sink area we have displayed eight planets and the sun. We all started on the sun. Then each time we read a book at home and at school we gain rocket fuel. This means that our rockets are able to fly to the next star. When we land on a planet we get a prize. When we land on the last planet we will be presented with a special prize in assembly.

Everyone is much more excited about reading at home and at school!
Who is in the lead? Pop into school and find out.

Guided Reading

Why are we really enjoying reading in Year One?

k%20and%20b%20reading.JPG

In Year One we read in partners. We have great fun and are able to help each other with our words. How do we do it?

First we practise our speed sounds - this is all of the phonemes we have learnt. We need to try and recognise them on sight.

Then we build up our green words. These are words that can be sounded out. We do this by Fred talk.

Next we look at the red words. Red words are tricky words and cannot be sounded out and you just need to be able to know them.

Then we read the book. We take turns reading a page each, helping each other if we get stuck. We have special teaching sticks that we use to point to the words, it helps us not to lose our place.

Finally we practise our speed words. These are the words that could be found in the story. It's a race who can read them all the fastest!!!

We are getting so good at our reading everyone is impressed.

Comparing Length

foot%20measuring.JPG

This week we have been comparing and measuring lengths in Year One. We used string and our feet to compare the length of different objects we found in the classroom.

string%20measuring.JPG

Red group used a piece of string to measure objects around the classroom. They found an object that was shorter, longer and 'roughly' the same size.

Green group drew around their feet and then compared them to the rest of the children on their table. They found out who had the longest and shortest foot and were able to order them.

Blue group had three strings of different length, they measured them and then ordered from longest to shortest.

Yellow group drew pictures making sure they had thought about the size. For example they drew a house that was larger than a boy and 3 snakes of different lengths.

We are getting really good at measuring!

Year 1 visit St. Andrews Church

All%20vicars.JPG

Father Alan met us at the church today. We were very excited and looking forward to learning lots about St. Andrews and what can be found in a church.

DSCF0193.JPG

First Father Alan allowed us to walk around the church with our partners and talk about what we could see. Then we asked lots of questions like:

What were the blocks of wood on the wall?- 14 stations of the cross
What were candles around the church for? - some were lit for people who had prayed and others were for ceremonies.
We asked why the poppies were in a circle? - This was a wreath to remember the soldiers who had died for our country.

After question time and the chance to talk about the Bible and the stations of the cross, some of use were able to dress up in father Alan's clothes. Don't we look fantastic! We found out that father Alan wears a shirt and dog collar everyday, this is his uniform. On weddings and Christenings he wears a black cossack with a white tunic over the top. On Sundays he wears green, white for Christmas and Easter Sunday, red for Remberance day, and finally he wears purple for Good Friday and sad occassions.

We really enjoyed our visit and Father Alan says we are welcome any time. We look forward to seeing him again soon.

You can see our other photos in the gallery.

Describing 3D Shapes

kesley%20and%20josh%20shapes.JPG

Year 1 have been describing and sorting 3D shapes. In pairs we described the shapes by looking at how many edges, corners and faces there were as well as the shape of the faces. We worked brilliantly together and were even able to sort our shapes and explain why we had sorted them in this way.

A Baptism in Year 1

DSCF0199edit.JPG

In R.E. we have been learning all about people who believe in God. They are called Christians. We spent a lot of time talking about how people who believe in God, belong to a family as well as learning about the special symbols they have, such as a cross and candle.

Finally we investigated a religous ceremony. Christians believe in naming their child in Church before God. We set up our classroom into the style of a church by making pews using our class chairs. We used a bowl of water for the special font and then selected our actors. We had two parents, four Godparents, four Grandparents, the vicar and most importantly the baby (who arrived from the Role Play area). The other children in the class acted as the congregation - it was an emotional occasion for some, who even cried (acting only)! The Reverend baptised the baby by pouring water on her head and marking the sign of the cross. Her parents then showed her off to everyone. The godparents were so proud to be chosen and also had a little cuddle.

Year 1 really enjoyed the lesson and talked about it for the rest of the afternoon. We are looking forward to visiting St. Andrews Church in a few weeks time, where we will get to see the real font. We hope you enjoy reading about how busy we have been. Please leave us a message if you have time.

What is Fred talk?

This year in Key Stage One, each class has a special visitor called Fred. Fred has come to help with our reading. Unfortunately Fred can only speak in sounds and so it is the children's job to help him understand by saying the words. For example Fred may say c-a-t and the children say cat. This is helping the chidlren to blend words from the sounds they are learning. When reading at home with your child you can ask them to Fred talk the word and then say the word if they are stuck. Remember the more you practise reading the easier it gets!

Photos of Year 1 Fred are to follow.

Writing Labels and Captions

DSCF0169.JPG

In the first half term we promised photos of our label work. Well here they are!

In this photo we can see that the P.E. cupbaord has no label. Year 1 soon sorted that out.

We have been exploring how labels, captions and signs give us important information.

First we went for a walk around school and found lots of places with labels. Examples were Key Stage One doors - please keep doors closed, Mrs Jones room - Deputy Headteacher and our own classroom had lots of labels and signs giving important information.

Next we found four areas that did not have a label and we took photographs. Mrs Inkster made a power point presentation using the photographs and in guided writing we wrote captions telling people what the photograph was of and what it was used for. Finally, we worked in pairs and wrote our own captions independently. Mrs Inkster was extremely pleased with the results.

In the photo below we found that the fire alarm did not have a label but it was important we all knew what and where it was in case of an emergency.

Signs in Year 1

DSCF0196.JPG
In Year 1 this half term we have spent time looking at labels, captions and also signs. We did a lot of work on the highway code and found out that red triangles were signs giving a warning and red circles were signs giving an order.

In class we worked in groups and came up with some fantastic ideas for Class Codes using red triangles and red circles. Mrs Inkster's favourite is the triangle with a picture of her in it. Green group thought of the warning "Mrs Inkster is watching." We have displayed our Class codes in the classroom for everyone to see. We hope you like them too.

Scruffy Scroggles

DSCF0197.JPG
Year 1 have been working so hard in ICT this term. We listened to a story about a very lonely monster called Scruffy Scroggles. Why was he lonely? It was because he was a good monster. He never picked his nose, always got his sums right, never put his elbow on the table at mealtimes and never ever, ever, used rude words. So we decided to make some monsters so Scruffy was not lonely anymore.

We used the paint program Fresco and experimented with colours, paintbrush size and even effects. Our work was fantastic. We developed skills suck as click and drag, as well as mouse control. Finally, we displayed all of our work in the cloakroom and Scruffy is now very happy and is not a lonely monster anymore.

Ollie the Octopus

DSCF0195.JPG
Ollie the Octopus helps Year 1 everyday with their adding. He is a huge octopus that lives in our classroom and doesn't know how to put on his boots before heading out for the day. Ollie writes on the board how many boots he has put on and how many he needs. Different children then put the correct number of boots on for Ollie and even make a sum. Thank you Year 1 children you are so helpful and are getting very good with adding two numbers.

Science - Ourselves

In Year One we have been learning all about ourselves. We have an exciting hospital role play area to link in with the topic.

Year%201%20hosp.JPG

Mrs Inkster asked a very important scientific question.
Is the oldest child, the tallest child in the class?
In pairs we make predictions and recorded our answers on the class whiteboard.

Then we went outside and Mrs Cairns and Mrs Inkster lined us up in height order. They even wrote our names on the wall behind us. Then we organised ourselves into age order.

We found that Owen was the oldest, Annalise was the youngest, Jake was the tallest and Shannon was the smallest.

An exciting experiment that let us know the oldest person is not always the tallest. We grow at different speeds and different heights. A fascinating fact!

More exciting work on ourselves to follow soon.

Key Stage One Nativity

Last week the children from Key stage one performed their excellent nativity, The Very Hopeless Camel. After weeks of rehearsals and hard work, the children pulled out all the stops and were a credit to the school. Parents, staff and other visitors were very proud of the children who displayed their talents in singing, dancing and acting. Well done to all children!

Enterprise Scheme

In Year 1 we have been very busy making money! So how did we do this?

First we had an idea, we would run a competition, 'Guess the Teddy Bear's Birthday.' Our teddy was a big supporter of Newcastle United, and he donated a framed football shirt as our prize. We charged £1 a guess and had a big calendar to mark all the entries on. The competition ran for two weeks and at the end we had 214 guesses, that meant that we had raised £214.

By the end of the two weeks we were all desperate to know, when is teddy's birthday? Only teddy had actually known. Well, we found out on the last day before the Christmas holiday, it was 28 November.

The lucky winner was able to take their fantastic prize home, and we hope had a very Merry Christmas.
