Wellbeing

One of our key drivers at Roman Road is mental health and wellbeing and we have a clear focus on teaching the characteristics of good physical health and mental wellbeing. Our staff and children know that mental wellbeing is a normal part of daily life in the same was as physical health.

Connect with other people

Good relationships are so important for our mental wellbeing and the first step to this is feeling a sense of belonging. Our children, families, staff, governors are all part of Team Roman Road and know that they belong here! Through our focus on oracy and communication, all of our children are encouraged to take part in activities that promote social interaction and connection with other children and staff.

Be physically active

It is difficult to be at Roman Road without being physically active! We have an amazing play offer during our ROAR lunchtimes – you will often find our children scooting or cycling on the wheeled yard or up in Forest School having a wild time. As well as our core PE offer, Gareth from SportsCool runs a daily lunchtime club that sees our children taking part in archery, basketball, hockey and much, much more!

Keep learning

This is a huge part of life here at Roman Road! Every day is a school day and we are all learning; our children learn in lessons and in social time; our staff learn through their carefully planned CPD and even our families get involved with the ever popular Family Learning sessions.

Give to others

We work together to foster a culture of kindness and generosity – not only through fundraising or giving to charity, but also by giving freely of our time to help others.

Take notice

At Roman Road, we promote mindfulness and awareness through activities that help children focus on their surroundings and their own feelings.

In school interventions

As well as delivering our comprehensive PSHE including RSE curriculum, we also run bespoke interventions in school. Each half term, senior leaders meet to build provision maps to ensure targeted support for those children who need it.

Our bespoke sessions include:

  • ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support) with Mrs Pearson
  • THRIVE delivered by Mrs Stewart, our Thrive Licensed Practitioner
  • 1:1 Mentoring
  • Forest School with Chris
  • Cosy Cafe
  • Space 2 Grow
  • Sessions delivered by the 0-19 Emotional Wellbeing Team
  • Sensory Circuits
  • Theraplay

If you think your child would benefit from any of these, please drop us a message on Class Dojo!

We are really pleased that our work with Space to Grow will be continuing this year. Space to Grow offers support for children struggling with their emotional health and wellbeing in KS2. With Space to Grow, children get the help they need to understand and deal with their feelings, build strong relationships and communicate.

Helen will be in school each Tuesday offering drop in sessions over lunchtime and then 1:1 sessions each Tuesday afternoon in The Zone.

Self Regulation

Children need to learn to understand and recognise their emotions while finding healthy ways to process them. Emotional self-regulation however, depends heavily on age and development. While very young children or children with SEND may find it particularly challenging to self-regulate, nurturing these important skills can be hugely beneficial. Here are ten top tips for supporting children with their self-regulation.
