Paul Cookson
As part of the National Year of Reading, we put a bid in to have a poet visit our school – we were successful (hooray!) and were so lucky to have Paul Cookson visit us!
This was an excellent offer of high quality cultural provision and exposed our children to the disciplinary practises of being a poet.
Here is our very favourite Paul Cookson poem – we love it because the message is for all of our Roman Road kids. Let no one steal your dreams!
Roman Road is a singing school!
Music is so important to us here at Roman Road – from our morning disco to our singing assemblies, music soothes our souls! Mrs Smith’s choir is legendary – their harmonies are out of this world!
Each year, our children take part in Summer Sings at The Glasshouse which offers an incredible opportunity for them to perform in Sage One – when you experience the acoustics here, you’ll know why this venue is world class.
Our assembly songs always have a meaning behind them linked to our Roman Road rules and values. In Autumn Term we always start with Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. This song reminds us that our life hasn’t already been planned out; we are the authors of our life and the future is unwritten. We can make it anything we want it to be!
Team Roman Road!
Everyone who is part of Roman Road automatically becomes part of Team Roman Road – but we also have some amazing sports teams who travel to festivals and tournaments to represent us.
Girls’ Football Team
Our KS1 Girls’ Football Team attended a 7 a side tournament, playing against teams from across the North East. They scored an astounding 27 goals and their boundless energy, confidence, teamwork and sheer talent made us all so proud.
A scout from SAFC was there to see if he could spot any future football talent – our very own Isla caught his eye and she has been offered the chance to develop and grow her football skills further by taking part in the Foundation of Light development pathway. From Romaness to Lioness, this girl can!
Into University
At Roman Road, we want to make sure that our children are prepared for life beyond school; one option for our children is university.
We have partnered with Into University to ensure our Roman Road children are aware of the routes into university and what courses they could take – this programme and our wider work on aspirations complement each other very well!
Into University come into school over the year and do workshops with our Y5 and Y6 classes; these focus on transition and the path to university.
They also offer a weekly After School Club that is FREE for children in receipt of free school meals. If you would like your child to attend, please contact the team using the contact details on the flyer below:
Access UNEE
We have developed a successful relationship with Access UNEE to improve and transform access and participation in higher education for our Roman Road children.
Access UNEE come out to school over the year and deliver workshops to our classes with the theme of raising aspirations and what the part to university may look like.
Y3 – Exploring Careers. This workshop aims to introduce the concept of university and encourage enthusiasm surrounding education and further study.
Y5 – LEGO Engineering. A really popular session where our Y5 class explore STEM careers and take a closer look at engineering through the use of LEGO, trying their hand at designing, building and racing their own vehicles in a fun competition.
Y6 – Transition. This session challenges our Y6 children with day-to-day activities they’ll encounter in secondary school as well as encouraging them to consider what they are ultimately working towards in the future; both education and career goals
Access UNEE also hosted a group of our children at Teesside University for a Hero Day; this gave our children an opportunity to see what life on campus is like and to sample a day in the life of a university student.

Springvale Court
We have made a new community link for 2026 and are proud to be working with Springvale Court – a care home just a short walk away from Roman Road.
Autumn 1 – we have a group of children going up to visit the residents and take part in some Halloween art and craft activities. A group of residents will then travel down to Roman Road to see our Harvest Special performance.
