Attendance

Header swoosh

You belong here!

We know that when children feel that they belong, they attend. And when they attend, they learn! We want that for ALL of our Roman Road children. Good attendance is essential to guarantee the highest possible achievement for your child and helps them learn the important life skill of being on time.

Our school day

Mr Patterson opens the MUGA gate at 8.50am and children head straight into school (via the morning disco!). All of our children experience the famous Roman Road ‘meet and greet’ – senior leaders are always on the door and then class teachers welcome children at their classroom doors. Some of our children then go on a sensory circuit, catch up with our ESLA Mrs Pearson or maybe just drop into Cosy Cafe for a quick slice of toast. Then we are all ready to start the day ahead!

Right time, right place!

We would love all of our Roman Road children to be at school on time – we love to see you dancing through the door each morning while we have our morning disco (Mrs Monaghan takes requests!).

If children are late, they will need to enter through the main office – this can cause some upset for children when they have to walk into class when all of their classmates are already working so it’s important that children are at school on time.

Registers close at 9.20am – if your child arrives after 9.20pm they will be marked in the register as a U. This is an unauthorised absence and will affect their overall attendance percentage. Please speak to staff if you would like any support around punctuality – we have an amazing FREE Breakfast Club which always helps with a smooth, settled start to the day.

If your child is absent, please ring school and let us know before 9am. If children are poorly, they should be off for the shortest time possible.

Why attending school everyday matters

Is my child too ill for school?

It can be tricky deciding whether or not to keep your child off school, nursery or playgroup when they’re unwell.

There are government guidelines for schools and nurseries about health protection and managing specific infectious diseases at GOV.UK. These say when children should be kept off school and when they shouldn’t.

If you do keep your child at home, it’s important to phone the school or nursery on the first day. Let them know that your child won’t be in and give them the reason.

If your child is well enough to go to school but has an infection that could be passed on, such as a cold sore or head lice, let their teacher know.
